Frequently asked questions

What is unclaimed property?

Unclaimed property is money or assets — like forgotten bank accounts, uncashed checks, insurance payouts, or utility deposits — that a company was unable to deliver to its rightful owner. By law, that money is eventually turned over to the state, which holds it until the owner (or their heirs) claims it.

Why did Ode contact me?

Our research identified unclaimed property reported to a state that appears to belong to you, based on matching name and location records. We reach out to let you know and to help you recover it.

Is this really my money?

It may be. States hold unclaimed property under the name and last-known address on file, which can be imprecise or outdated. That's why we ask for identifying documentation — it lets us (and the state) confirm the property is really yours before any money changes hands.

Why do I need to provide identification?

States require proof of identity before releasing unclaimed funds, to make sure money is returned to the rightful owner and not someone else. We only request what the specific claim requires.

How long does the process take?

[Placeholder — timing varies by state and claim type and hasn't been finalized. Replace with Ode's actual guidance, e.g. a typical range once available.]

What documents might be required?

It depends on the claim, but commonly requested items include a government-issued photo ID, proof of address, and — for claims involving an estate — documents like a death certificate or probate paperwork. Your claim page always lists exactly what's needed.

Can I claim the money myself?

In most cases, yes — you're generally free to file directly with the state yourself at no cost. Ode offers to manage the research, paperwork, and follow-up on your behalf.

How does Ode get paid?
